Buttons: styles

Top

Closed Top This is the most common style of button, where the cap is solid, covering the shank and nail.

Two-Color Top A variation of the closed top, where the center part of the cap is a different metal or finish than the outer edge of the cap.

Open Top Also known as a "donut," the open top button has a "hollow" cap allowing the shaft and nail to be visible. (This button has a shank with a closed bottom and is applied with a double prong nail. After application, both prongs can be seen "curled" deep inside the bottom of the shank).

Shank

Swivel Base Tack Buttons A swivel base tack button features a shank bottom that allows rotation of the button, so the consumer can "twirl" the buttons at will.

Nail

Single Prong Most common and most secure attachment, used for closed top and swivel base buttons. (Requires open bottom shank). Plastic shanks are often attached with a plastic threaded screw-type nail.

Double Prong Used for open top buttons and closed bottom shanks, the prongs pierce the metal of the shank bottom and then "curl" over each other to "hook" the button onto the fabric. Double prong nails are required for open top buttons, but be aware that the resulting button is not quite as strong as those applied with a single prong nail.
