Labels are an essential part of every garment, providing legally required care instructions and content information. For most garments, labels also provide the primary method of brand identification. They can be used in similar ways on many other products, including shoes, handbags, hats and the entire gamut of bed linens, including sheets, blankets and comforters.
Woven and printed labels can be used for many of the same purposes, but there are important differences. In general, printed labels are cheaper and faster to produce than woven labels, while woven labels are more durable, surviving most commercial washes and even year after year of home washing. For higher-priced fashions, woven labels have long been the standard, providing a more luxurious and sophisticated appearance, although printed labels on fabric are becoming more and more popular. Whenever you have a lot of text or very small text as in care/content labels, printed labels will be more legible than woven labels. Printed labels can show logo artwork very accurately, and can even feature full-color photographic images (through "four-color process" printing). On the other hand, inexpensive printed labels on paper or cheap fabric often get ripped out by the consumer after purchase, while a woven label is often considered an integral part of the garment, even adding perceived value. On the pages that follow, we'll provide more specific details on the different attributes of woven and printed labels.
